The prints of Utagawa Hiroshige (Japanese, 17971858) convey a sense of timeless repose even as they capture fleeting seasonal changes. Hiroshige was born, lived, and died in Edo (renamed Tokyo in 1868), which by the eighteenth century had become the worlds largest city. The artist captured these views just a few years after United States naval commander Matthew Perry forced Japan to end two remarkable centuries of seclusion. This calendars twelve prints, selected from Hiroshiges celebrated series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, are a valedictory portrait of a culture about to undergo a rapid transformation.
