Aloha Aina: Big Island Memories

This collection, Aloha Aina: Big Island Memories, was written by about 60 individuals, many of whom are active and well-known in the communities in which they live, from all walks of life and ethnicities. Their recollections reveal personal experiences and sensitivities. We hope this book will inspire more stories and recollections that provide an insight and appreciation of who we are and how each contributes to the development of this unique local culture for all who call this island their home. There are some 80 writings – testimonials of hardships and struggles, of love and hope, of the deep bond with the aina and fellow man, the immigrations to Hawaii, the wartime hysteria during World War II, memories of small kid time, and nostalgic reminiscences with illustrations are by local artists. In spite of the incredible hardships and adversities, the people rose above them and left us a legacy of perseverance, fortitude and devotion. By documenting them, we are preserving the treasures of the past for future generations before they are lost forever.
