BIM Education Program Unit 3 Instructor's Guide

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a process used for design or integration of design that uses 3D modeling and may also incorporate scheduling, quantity takeoff capabilities, and spatial coordination. This digital building process allows for a level of collaboration that has resulted in a fundamental paradigm shift for the entire architecture, engineering, and
construction (AEC) industry. The ultimate goals have not changed—to have successful projects completed on time, on budget, and with no litigation. To achieve these goals, it is necessary to work in a collaborative environment—
ideally one where roles and responsibilities are well defined and articulated. Shared BIM tools help enable and foster this collaboration, also making it possible for projects to benefit from improved efficiency, continuity, and
effectiveness.
Unit 3 of the AGC BIM Education Program is intended to serve multiple functions and audiences. On a corporate level, it is essential that participants understand that the BIM process and the respective role their company may perform in that process should be the key determining factors when negotiating contract terms about BIM. On a personal level, participants can use the AGC BIM Education Program to assist in their own professional development as a “BIM Champion” within their organization. This course is just one part of the foundation that is available to help participants reach this goal.
