This book covers expert U.S. Marine sniper Carlos Hathcock’s three important Vietnam War missions in the mid-1960s with details not commonly known. It deals with his heroism that earned him the Silver Star Medal and it includes the tributes he received after he retired from Service.

The author pulls no punches describing the events of this canny Marine sniper’s Vietnam experiences, whether it details how he managed to take out an enemy almost a mile-and-a-half away – twice the range of the Winchester .30-06 sniper rifle he favored--but it takes you along with Carlos who preferred working alone as he fulfills his promise to a dying Marine who has been tortured mercilessly all night long, and how he carried out that promise. Then you get to go along on his near death experience tracking down the Cobra, the North Vietnam Army super-sniper sent by them to find and kill Carlos whom they know as “White Feather.”

And finally, after your adrenal rush settles down and those imaginary jungle jitters fade away we hear about what it was like for later-day Marines to actually meet the Gunny himself and what they thought about him after that meeting. I’ve read this book many times but reading those Marine responses about how Hathcock was and how much they respected him always puts a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye.
