Families mentioned still exist and have descended in unbroken lines to the present time, even though the characters in the story are fictional. However, modifications in geographical distances and locations have been made to suit the purpose of the story.

Fiery, red-haired, green-eyed Arabella lives in terror by night. She is tortured by fearsome nightmares of being murdered by a faceless apparition that wrench her from sleep, screaming in fear. By day, she is determined to forge her own future in spite of the necessity to marry soon and marry well because her beloved mother is ill with tuberculosis and may die.

A mysterious man, far too handsome and far too charmingly insolent, waylays Arabella on a dark balcony at a ball with a laugh and lazy baritone innuendoes that rouse her sleeping senses in a very disturbing, but intriguing fashion. She finds herself pitting her independent spirit and mental agility against the effect his self-assured nearness has on her—and barely holds her own, not that she would ever admit it to him! (But oh, “the sweet surrender,” she admits to herself.)

Arabella does not know that, upon meeting her, he finds his blood set on fire and that she drives him almost mad with desire. He is determined to capture her and take her to his castle in the remote Scottish highlands where he is lord and master of an ancient and powerful clan. (“There is something about her”. . .) Just what are his undeclared intentions?

What neither of them know, as yet, is that a psychotic killer who prowls the nights in the darkened streets of London and in the remote reaches of the Scottish Highlands will murder both of them at the earliest opportunity. Why? WILL HE SUCCEED?
