Based on years of research and travel, the text follows the arc of Poe's life and career--but also challenges the conventional thinking that Poe was a hopeless drunk and drug addict. Certainly, he had substance abuse problems at periods in his life, but he simply could not have accomplished all that he did--all the stories, poems, essays, reviews, and other writing--if he had been under the influence thoughout his short life of forty years.
