Hokusai: 62 Drawings (Annotated Masterpieces Book 17)

This Art Book contains Foreword and annotated reproductions of Katsushika Hokusai drawings by Maria Tsaneva, date and interesting facts page below.

Katsushika Hokusai is one of the most famous Japanese artists, and the essence of the Ukiyo-e ("floating world") style. He as well is one of the great draftsmen of the world.

Hokusai was a self-skilled artist until 1778. After that year, he probably went on to study with the academic painter Kano Yusen. His introduction to the Rimpa School in around 1796 was a important point in his career. He quickly developed a name as a famous painter using the name Sōri. From this time, Hokusai also often signed himself, Gakyōjin ("the man mad about painting") Hokusai.

Hokusai had a long career, but he produced most of his important work after age 60. Only 15-volume collection Hokusai Manga was a book heaving with nearly 4,000 sketches of animals, people, objects, etc. The old artist lost everything in a fire at his lodgings in 1839 and devoted the last ten years of his life to drawing more and more supernatural subjects, such as tigers and mythic creatures.
