One day, when I was playing with my daughters, I suddenly realised that our daughters have very little opportunity to learn Chinese. But I wanted to provide them with more opportunity to talk Chinese.

Hi, I'm Mitch Takahashi, the author of this book. Currently, I live in Japan with my family; my wife, two daughters, and two cats. I'm Japanese, but my wife is Chinese. Both my wife and I always wanted to bring up our children to be trilingual in English, Chinese, and Japanese. And we have tried to teach our children these languages with many different ways. However, for some reason, it has always been a little challenge for us to home-teach Chinese to them; exposure to Chinese was very limited as we normally speak English at home. That's because my wife and I met each other when we lived abroad, and since then, English has been our common language.

Now the question is... how we can give our daughters more exposure to Chinese language. After thinking for a while, I though I could buy some Chinese-Japanese and/or -English bilingual or trilingual picture books and I could read them with my daughters together. So, I went off to look for such books in bookstores and in the Internet. However, to my surprise, I couldn’t find such books anywhere. Then, I told my wife about it, and we found the answer: “Let’s make some by ourselves!” So we decided to make some Chinese-Japanese bilingual picture books by ourselves.

Now wait a minute! You might have started to wonder why you are reading about a Chinese-Japanese picture book. Don’t worry. This IS a Japanese-English picture book. Just that originally, I made this book as a Chinese-Japanese picture book for my own daughters, but when I published it on amazon.co.jp, I received many comments and they told me that they would like to have it in Japanese-English as well. So, I decided to make a Japanese-English edition.

In some pages, there are also lists of vocabulary and brief grammar explanations as well, so you don’t need to know much of Japanese grammar either. I will introduce the Japanese grammar little by little in later stories of this series. So you’ll learn Japanese grammar gradually.
