How in this world am I going to help him change back? I'm more alone with him here than I was when he was gone off to the war.

â€œThatâ€™s the truth. Son, how are you and Laine getting along?â€
â€œFine.â€
â€œAre you sure? Iâ€™ve heard talk.â€
â€œTalk?â€ Jonas scorned. â€œHow could there be talk? Besides, since when do you believe vicious gossip?â€
â€œWhen thereâ€™s some truth to it,â€ Pete told him calmly. â€œItâ€™s easy to tell youâ€™ve not been yourself since you came home. Itâ€™s a fact that war does bad things to a man, life altering things.â€
â€œIâ€™m glad you told me or I might not have known.â€
â€œDonâ€™t get smart-mouthed, son. You know I only have your best interest at heart.â€
â€œLeave Laine out of it. Sheâ€™s my problem.â€
Problem? Jonas saw me as his problem? His problem!
â€œYouâ€™re lucky to have her,â€ Pete added.
â€œSo Iâ€™ve been told, and only by men,â€ he said again. It was easy to tell Jonas wasnâ€™t liking what Pete was saying about me.
Pete didnâ€™t accuse him of being jealous this time. â€œDaren looks exactly like you,â€ he said instead.
â€œI know.â€
â€œYou canâ€™t deny that boy.â€
â€œIâ€™ve never tried to deny him.â€
â€œYet, you were gone when he came about.â€
â€œNo Dad, not gone â€“ only AWOL for a few hours.â€
â€œSo, thatâ€™s how he happened?â€
â€œRight.â€
â€œLaine never said a word, even when the gossip turned bad. Her own mother accused her of being a tramp.â€
How was there gossip? How did Pete know about Daren? Even Momma had to know if she called me a tramp â€“ but maybe not.
â€œThat shouldnâ€™t have surprised anyone.â€
â€œDoubt it did.â€
â€œWhat else did you come here to find out about?â€ Jonas asked him outright.
â€œLike I said, I came to see my grandchildren. I also came to make sure my only son was doing all right. Sometimes a man needs somebody to confide in, even if itâ€™s only his dad. I donâ€™t want you festering up from self-pity until you lose the best things in life a man can have. To allow that to happen would be plain stupid.â€
