King's Indian Defense E60-99: 837 Characteristic Chess Puzzles

The King's Indian Defense is a hypermodern opening, where Black deliberately allows White control of the center with his pawns, with the view to later challenge it with the moves ...e5 or ...c5. With White committed to the center thrust, Black can create an equalizing wing expansion on either side, challenging White's commitment. Hence, there are huge areas for both sides to develop their pieces and tactics. The resulting tactics are fairly unique to the opening. Until the mid-1930s the theory behind this opening was considered suspect but it has attracted much attention and over time, has been adopted by many World Champions including Botvinnik, Tal, Fischer and Kasparov. It is played as Black by nearly all of the top 10 FIDE rated players today. This volume is indexed by ECO classification so that the reader can focus on his or her area of expertise.
