Excerpt: As she stood there watching for the intruder to come back into sight, she kept hoping to hear the sound of Max returning. The stranger had evidently assumed that no one was on the property, seeing no vehicle. She decided if she saw him head toward the house, she would try to slip out the back door and make a run for it. It seemed a better alternative to being discovered if he started ransacking the house. What was this person after? This was no longer an intriguing mystery. How would she and Max ever be able to enjoy the ranch and experience the tranquility they were hoping for as long as this man was at large? Would she ever feel safe being there alone again? Eva stood alongside the window, waiting and watching for what seemed like forever. In reality, it was about thirty minutes. And then her heart starting pounding, and her whole body began to tremble as the figure once again came into view. She felt as though she could not draw a breath. She started to retreat from the window, enough that she could still see him but so that she would be closer to getting to the back door.
