When the call came, Lucy Hickey-Rios and her staff rushed to rescue a dog that had been horribly injured. The police had found him hiding in an apartment where his owner, a young woman, had been stabbed to death.

While the police investigated the crime, Lucy, the Executive Director of a private, non-profit animal shelter, and her staff, went about their business caring for the homeless and abused animals in their community.
