Science and Metaphysics: Variations on Kantian Themes

The invitation to give the John Locke Lectures provided the challenge, and the award of a Reflective Year Fellowship by the Carnegie Corporation the opportunity, to present in systematic form the views I have developed and modified in paper after paper over the past twenty years.1 The result of this challenge and this opportunity is the present book. It is my hope that in addition to standing on its own feet as a piece of sustained argument, it will provide a framework within which the above mentioned papers will gain in intelligibility and show their family resemblance.
