Tahoe Place Names: The Origin and History of Names in the Lake Tahoe Basin

  • Used Book in Good Condition

Contains old names, Washoe Indian names, and the diary of Charles Preuss from January and February 1844. (Frémont's second expedition to the Far West). Frémont and Preuss were the first white men to see Lake Tahoe, on February 14, 1844. With 39 photos and photos of portions of seven early maps.
From the Sacramento Daily Union, June 1, 1863:
It is proposed to drop the name Bigler from the lake among the Sierras and adopt the Indian name of Tahoe. Good idea. Why the finest sheet of water in the mountains should be named after a fifth rate politician we have never been able to see. Let's call it Tahoe. Fine fishing in Tahoe. Who's going on a pleasant excursion this Summer to Tahoe? Poetical name: Indian name: proper name. Who don't say Tahoe?
