This handsome volume is devoted to the paintings of the Fauves, the group of French post-impressionist artists who, like the impressionists themselves, owed their name to a dismissive epithet by a hostile critic. Fortunately, the Fauvistes had their admirers, and none more so than the Russian collectors Shchukin and the Morozov brothers, whose paintings are now divided between the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Art in Moscow. This book contains full-color reproductions of the most representative works of the leading proponents of their flamboyant style.
