Anxious to move out of the Sinful Inn, Moses May Murphy enlists the help of Ida Belle and Gertie. Surely, they know of available housing that a woman in Mo's position can afford. Or do they? Just when Mo begins to doubt them, they take her to a little gem of a house. And it's right up Mo's alley. So what's a little smoke damage?

Unfortunately, the previous owner, Darlene, died under what Mo considers suspicious conditions. Darlene was a terrible cook, so no one questioned her death from a burning casserole. But Mo knows better, and it doesn't take long for Ida Belle and Gertie to climb on board. The real problem is convincing Deputy Carter LeBlanc and the banker to open an investigation. That proves to be a little tricky since the women didn't have permission to enter the house.

Carter sets Mo up with the banker for an "official" look at the house as a potential buyer. But things go wrong, especially when Ida Belle and Gertie decide to lend an unofficial hand. Even handsome State Trooper Tony Reese can't rescue the situation once they get involved. But that's not going to stop the women from fixing the problem and proving Darlene's good-for-nothing husband is responsible for Darlene's death.

A reluctant Mo agrees to be part of a sure to backfire plan of action, involving the troublesome trio of Ida Belle, Gertie, and Fortune. It sends Mo to the Swamp Bar looking for answers where she finds out that, yes, things can get worse!
