The Snow Woman: Selected Haiku by Fukuda Chiyo-ni

Fukuda Chiyo-ni (also known as Kaga no Chiyo or Chiyo-Jo) is not just a “nature oriented” artist, as it might seem to the first reading, but the haijin of “nature as a place of human life”, where everyday life and eternity (“constancy and change”, to paraphrase the meaning of fueki ryuko) blend with a familiar and magnificent inspiration.

This book collects fifty haiku, composed during the entire life of Chiyo-ni. They can be considered her “poetic last-will” or, if you prefer, the sign of her passage through this impermanent world, where every haijin is tasked to shine like a torch in the night, showing people the way to find themselves.
