When Karl Kessel decided to immigrate to America, he had one thing on his mind—opportunity! After a grueling and life-changing journey aboard a cramped ship across the Atlantic, Karl prepared a way for his wife and two children to join him in the new country, and soon they were on their way to success. However, as with most immigrant families in the early part of the twentieth century in America, hardships and struggles became the daily toil. The struggle between retaining German traditional values and discovering new ways of living in rural America began to take its toll on the growing Kessel family.
