  • Introduction to programming in a UNIX Environment

Unix system V programmers guide is intended for a programmer who may have no prior UNIX experience. It provides information about programming in a UNIX environment by taking advantage of the tools, programs and system resources. Experts should look for Unix System V Reference Manual instead. It begins with a history of UNIX, from its early development by Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie at Bell Labs in the 1960s (for which they received the 1983 Turing Award). In 1971 it was used at Bell Labs. and in 1974 was first offered to colleges and universities. Several versions were developed at Universities, most notably UNIX BSD at Berkeley in California. Beginning in 1979 AT&T released supported versions identified by Roman numerals. The current version at this time was UNIX System V release 3.0. The book is very readable and provide examples of the system features. Even today it should be of interest.
