The Worldâ€™s population has simply disappeared.

People woke to find their lovers no longer beside them. Children woke to find their parents missing, parents woke to empty cribs. Neighbors found empty houses, empty apartment buildings. Civilization collapsed.

Three decades after the Vanishing, as it is called, the traumatized survivors are still trying to cope with loss and loneliness: some, like the destructive â€™Bounders, gravitate toward religious fanaticism, thinking that the Vanishing was Judgement Day, while others preserve the memory of lost lives by maintaining their empty homes.

But all is not lost. Now, the inhabitants of the former Winchester Mansion in San Jose, California have reason to be optimistic, pulling together to rebuild a secure life in an altered world.

At the House, a young woman, Renzie, is part of a team rebuilding society and researching the Vanishing. From across country an elderly scientist, Nesta Easterman, arrives with new theories and new approaches. Between them, they might just be able to salvage a new world order from the rubble.

But can Renzie and Nesta vanquish the â€™Bounders before all is truly lost forever?
