Writing Violence #1: Getting shot

What happens when a character gets shot? How do you write a convincing action scene about something you've never witnessed and only seen in the movies? Does your character fly back through the air? Fall down? Die instantly? Return fire? Keep on advancing? Or does the character not even know he or she has been shot?
